Margao Monthly – 27/July/2026 – recap and results

QM: Viola Rodrigues

 Material Girl

‘Cause we are living in a material world

And I am a material girl

You know that we are living in a material world!

(Lyrics from Material Girl)

The ‘material world’ conjured by the pop diva Madonna is not the material that Viola works with. A scientist by profession, Viola is observant, analytical and erudite. A true lover of science and scientific thinking.

For Viola, scientific facts and knowledge are not abstract, complex and technical to the point of being beyond the comprehension of a common person. Instead, she brings the scientific temper into the everyday and relatable aspects of life, especially through the food we eat, the beverages we drink and the clothes we wear.

Viola’s quiz spread over four rounds covered not only the flora and fauna, but also trivia on movies, literature, language and everything under the sun. It was above all a great learning experience; who knew that your navel could host some organisms that thrive in the Artic cold and others that survive the underwater vents of hot blasts. It is like Modi and Rahul living in the same small pothole.

There were a few references to the material world as against the materials that make the world by way of exotic food, for instance the macadamia nuts that compelled the pilot to turn back, the reproductive organs of the sea urchin that is a prized dish for the material people like Madonna and others.

The climax was the connect in triads and the grandmother – daughter - granddaughter overall connect. A fitting tribute to the Grandparents Day celebrated across parishes in Goa and other parts of the world.

Voila! What a way to conclude a great quiz, Viola! May her tribe increase

Panjim Monthly – 05/July/2026 – recap and results

QM: Karan Dhingra

Karan’s Panjim monthly was a delightful ray of sunshine in the otherwise dark and foreboding weather we have been given. It was wonderfully light and even irreverent ,and made with an effort that showed.I find myself still surprised at how much of the QM’s personality shows up in a quiz that they set. We are allowed glimpses into what they like and find interesting, and what they are fascinated by. It is an unlikely but a true way of getting to know someone who stands up there on the dais and lets us walk through their mind. It is as if the mind is in conversation with us directly, and the QM is merely a conduit-“Come tell me what you see”.

The quiz was set in six brisk rounds, with the first being a written round on the theme of “5”. Perhaps a nod to date of the quiz?. The next round was quite fun, once you had arrived at the theme of the three columns. I especially liked the column with the capital cities. Then there were two short rounds of pounce and bounce on general topics . I particularly appreciated that the QM designed two compact sets of twelve questions, separated by a tea break. It made the quiz feel lighter and far more palatable than one long marathon. In the round five,we had to identify popular idioms and phrases using AI-assisted image clues. And then we moved to the end of the quiz with three connect questions.

What a lovely way to spend a rainy evening. Fun questions that spanned a multitude of topics, hot chai, good conversations and getting to leave with the feeling that one has learnt slightly more than when one walked into the room. A good quiz makes us feel good at the end;it reminds us that although there is still so much we do not know about the world, we have made some headway today.

Also, a big thank you to Shujoy for the beautiful show and tell from his trip to Africa. The stories were fun and the pictures, awe-inspiring!
