QPL Finals

The Finals of the Quizzing Premier League (QPL) will be held on Saturday, June 2, at the International Centre Goa, immediately upon the conclusion of the World Quizzing Championship written quiz.

Date: Saturday June 2, 2012
Time: 5.30pm
Venue: International Centre Goa, Dona Paula
QM: Aniruddha Sen Gupta
Flavour: General, with some word games and other antics thrown in
Participation: Teams that have qualified through previous rounds
The event is open for all others to come and be part of the audience. There is also the possibility of being able to participate as substitutes and Super-subs, in case some team members fail to show up.

QPL -- Road to the Finals

So the four teams that will face off against each other in the Finals of the Quizzing Premier League (QPL) competition have been identified:
  • Slouchers: Anil Rodrigues*, Srijit K, Ajey Patil and Akshay S. Rege (Priority 1 and 2 substitutes: Julian D'Costa, Lea Rebello)
  • Poders: Rajiv D'Silva*, Jatan Rodrigues, Mahesh Prabhu and Agastya Keni (Priority 1 and 2 substitutes: none)
  • Tubelights: Nitish Wagle*, Kalpana Satarkar, Anjali Sen Gupta and Leroy Veloso (Priority 1 and 2 substitutes: Anand P.S., Ashwin Mascarenhas)
  • Gaurs: Paul Gatward*, Tallulah D'Silva, Parind Phadte and Soham Gaunekar (Priority 1 and 2 substitutes: Amey)
A total of 55 participants have been part of the 13 teams at different stages of the competition, in addition to four who appeared in the Selections Trials but weren't available when their respective teams took the field.

One person, Lara Pereira, has appeared for three different teams as a result of the substitution policy. Sadly for her, in none of those cases has the team got through to the next stage.

Though several teams got second chances during the course of the tournament, the road to the Finals for the four qualifying teams has been quite smooth, perhaps underlining the likelihood that they are, after all, the four best teams in the competition.

The Slouchers won their opening round match, beating the Tubelights by just 6 points, and also won their Semi-final match, this time more comfortably.

The Poders were runners-up in both their matches -- to the Gaurs in the opening round, and to the Slouchers in the Semis.

The Tubelights, having been pipped at the post in their opening-round match, then turned the tables in the Semis, defeating the Gaurs by a mere 4 points.

From these three facts, any lover of logic problems will easily be able to see that the Gaurs, too, have won one match and been second in the other, so far.

Also of note is the fact that none of the teams from the opening round Match 3 and the subsequent Play-off match have made it to the Finals.

QPL Semi-final B -- results

The second QPL Semi-final was much more of a humdinger than the first one. Three teams were in the fray right till the last question, but it was the youngest of the lot that eventually gave in to the staying power of the oldies. SEQC veteran Leroy Veloso returned, got lucky and entered the Finals.
Here are the results:

1st: Tubelights (Nitish Wagle*, Kalpana Satarkar, Anjali Sen Gupta and Leroy Veloso) -- 176 points
2nd: Gaurs (Paul Gatward*, Tallulah D'Silva, Parind Phadte and Soham Gaunekar) -- 172
3rd: Couch Potatoes (Shubham Tiwari*, Kunal Naik, Nitish Fatarpekar and Tanuj) -- 156
4th: Bloody B@@skets (Harsh Hegde*, Eric Correia, Ashwin Kumar and Sahil Ramchandani) -- 84

Tubelights and Gaurs make it through to the Finals. Commiserations to the Couch Potatoes.

QPL Semi-final B -- questions and answers

Year 5 Quiz 1

The first quiz of SEQC's 5th year! If that isn't reason enough to attend, there are more. Firstly, the quiz will be hosted by our 'comeback' kid Atharv Joshi. His little doses in the past have shown much promise, and he will on Sunday become the second person to host a full-fledged SEQC quiz before they could grow a moustache.
Secondly, we will crown Aniruddha Sen Gupta SEQC champion for the third year running, he will become the first person to do so before they began shaving. (ROTFLMAO)
And thirdly, and some point during the proceedings, I intend to take one large group picture of everybody present, like we did on Day 1 of Year 1. So if you're not there, you'll miss out.

Date: 3rd June 2012
Time: 5.00 pm
QM: Atharv Joshi

QPL Semi-final B

The second of the Quizzing Premier League (QPL) Semi-finals is coming up in Margao on Saturday May 26.

Venue: Urban Health Centre (opp Hospicio), Margao
Date: Saturday, May 26
Time: 5pm
Flavour: General, with a smattering of word games and other antics
Participation: Qualifying teams from previous rounds (Tubelights, Gaurs, Couch Potatoes, Bloody B@@skets). Top two teams will qualify for the Finals.

The first Semi-final was, to coin a phrase, rather two-sided. Will this one be the same? Turn up and you will find out -- and if you're lucky (like several audience members during Semi-final A were), you might even get to join a team as a substitute.

QPL Semi-final A -- results

The first Semi-final of the Quizzing Premier League (QPL), held on May 20 at the International Centre Goa in Dona Paula, resolved itself early on into a top half and a bottom half, and stayed that way till the end. Sadly, the Washouts, a Margao team that braved blocked bridges, rides in tempos and other such hardships to make it to the venue, didn't make it further. At the other end, buoyed by the presence of Super-sub Ajey Patil in place of their captain Julian D'Costa, the Slouchers emerged on top. Here are the final scores:

1st: Slouchers (Anil Rodrigues*, Srijit K, Ajey Patil and Akshay S. Rege) -- 230 points
2nd: Poders (Rajiv D'Silva*, Jatan Rodrigues, Mahesh Prabhu and Agastya Keni) -- 185 points
3rd: Samurais (Sunil Sardessai*, Sachin Chatte, Mohnish Sardessai and Sanchita Rodrigues) -- 87 points
4th: Washouts (Suraj Kamat*, Wyl Coutinho, Soniya Vengurlekar and Hilario Goes) -- 66 points

Slouchers and Poders go through to the QPL Finals.

SEQC May 2012 monthly -- questions and answers

The May monthly, which I like to try and make my best quiz of the year, was a damp squib this year around. Too many commitments on my part meant that I did a rather shoddy job on this one. Here is the half-baked result:

SEQC Kids Special 2012

Kunal Naik put together an excellent quiz for others like him -- school kids -- in the form of the SEQC Kids Special 2012 held on May 6, just before the May monthly. Here is the Powerpoint file:

QPL Semi-finals Line-up

Eight teams have made it through to the QPL Semi-finals. Here are the Semi-final line-ups.
Semi-final A, Panjim, Sunday May 20: Slouchers, Poders, Washouts, Samurais
Semi-final B, Margao, Saturday May 26: Tubelights, Gaurs, Couch Potatoes, Bloody B@@skets

Teams will consist of four members each, ideally those from the most recent outings of the team. In case of absent members, substitutions will be made on the following criteria:
Priority 1: Any member who has been part of the team at any stage
Priority 2: Any member who was originally selected for the team but did not participate in any of its matches
Priority 3: Players from teams not in the Semis, with substitutions made based on the proximity of scores from the Selection Trials

If even one member of a team turns up, that team will be deemed to be present and the other members will be substituted. If all members of a team fail to turn up, that team will be replaced by the next best team, based on the scores in the Round 1 Matches.

Potential team compositions
* Slouchers: Julian D'Costa*, Anil Rodrigues, Lea Rebello and Srijit Kumar (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: none)
* Poders: Rajiv D'Silva*, Mahesh Prabhu and Agastya Keni (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: Jatan Rodrigues)
* Washouts: Andy Carvalho*, Suraj Kamat, Soniya Vengurlekar and Wyl Coutinho (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: Hilario Goes)
* Samurais: Sunil Sardessai*, Ari Pereira, Ira Almeida and Mohnish Sardessai (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: Tanmay Naik, Kedar Naik, Rohit Viegas)
* Tubelights: Nitish Wagle, Anand P.S., Anjali Sen Gupta and Ashwin Mascarenhas (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: none)
* Gaurs: Paul Gatward*, Tallulah D'Silva and Soham Gaunekar (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: Parind Phadte, Amey)
* Couch Potatoes: Shubham Tiwari*, Kunal Naik and Nitish Fatarpekar (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: none)
* Bloody B@@skets: Harsh Hegde*, Ashwin Kumar, Eric Correia and Nathan Moniz (possible Priority 1 and 2 subs: Karen Almeida, Julia Talaulikar)

QPL Play-off Match results

Another humdinger of a match in the ongoing Quizzing Premier League (QPL) tournament saw the last two teams being identified for the Semi-finals. It was a last-ball finish at the Play-off Match held in Margao on May 5 -- the final question (a Dumb Charades clue) determined which team would make it through. Here are the results:

1st: Bloody B@@skets (Harsh Hegde*, Ashwin Kumar, Eric Correia, Nathan Moniz and Karen Almeida) - 156 points
2nd: Samurais (Sunil Sardessai*, Ari Pereira, Ira Almeida, Mohnish Sardessai) - 120 points
3rd: Cerebral Blast (Sanjay Parab*, Sahil Ramchandani, Kalpana Satarkar, Lynn Barreto Miranda and Viola Rodrigues) - 105 points
4th: Avengers (Shashwat Salgaonkar*, S. Varun Kumar, Kanchan Gatward and Shukr Usgaonkar) - 93 points

Bloody B@@skets and Samurais make it through to the Semi-finals.
