AtWi30Q – Report, results and content of Game 1

Okay, so there were a few glitches. But it wasn't all bad. Eventually, we settled on a steady rhythm and then things went smoothly.

Game 1 of 'Around the World in 30 Questions' played out with much raucous fun. A 30-question prelims helped sort individuals into teams, all of them named after adventurous or wayfaring creatures. The six teams then started around the world, with four of them surging distinctly ahead of the other two.

In the end (about two hours in, when we ran out of questions), things were awfully tight at the top and at the bottom, meaning that the game will be keenly afoot in future editions.

Here are the results of Game 1:

1st: The Pilot Whales (Rajiv D'Silva*, Ameya Mardolkar, Deepsee Salgaonkar, Ravi T, Sanjay Parab, Srijit Kumar, Viola Rodrigues) – 19 stops (13 answers)
2nd: The English Bulldogs (Vidyadhar Gadgil*, Akash Kulkarni, Avedika Arudrya, Parind Phadte, Rajeev Nedumaran, Raunaq Rao, Tom Matthews, Vikram D'Silva) – 18 (12)
3rd: The Leopard Seals (Anjali Sen Gupta*, Aakash Timmapurkar, George L.V., Leroy Veloso, Lynn Barreto Miranda, Omkar Naik, Ronnie J. D'Mello, Saahil Sharma) – 18 (12)
4th: The Amur Falcons (Nitish Wagle*, Amod Kolwalkar, Andrew Williams, Ashwin Mascarenhas, Devansh Cholera, Dhanaraj Naik, Kenneth Alvares) – 18 (11)
5th: The Clouded Leopards (Veenu Vas*, Astrid Vas, C.N. Prabhakar, Neil Balthazer, Ramchandra Prabhu Salgaonkar, Suhani A. Prabhu, Suraj Kamat) – 8 (7)
6th: The Tasmanian Devils (Keith Alvares*, Anant Prabhu, Harsh Hegde, Kv Gouthami, Mahesh Prabhu, Nipa Shetty, Sanchit Mahajan, Vishal Malapati) – 8 (5)

Around the World in 30 Questions

Every year, SEQC has one 'series quiz' – a tournament that spans several days over the course of a few months. The series event planned for October-December 2014 is a quiz-based game called 'Around the World in 30 Questions'.

The essence of the game is to circumnavigate a route marked along the world map shown above, moving ahead by answering questions related to the location you're on. The use of a die to move will bring in an element of luck into the game, while your ability to answer questions will constitute the skill factor.

The tournament begins at 5pm on Sunday October 19 at the International Centre Goa (ICG) in Dona Paula. All those who turn up on the day will individually take a prelims, consisting of a written round of 33 questions to be answered in 20 minutes. All participants will then be divided into six teams based on their scores, and go on to play the first round of 'Around the World in 30 Minutes'. The teams will remain constant over the course of the tournament.

Additional details about the game are provided here, and you're welcome to check them out if you like.

The event promises to be a world of fun, so land up in large numbers. No registration is required, and all are welcome to come and play, so spread the word.
