A Knock Out (Karan and Omkar)- recap of the Margao April Quiz

Review of the Margao April monthly by Assis Sequeira

For reasons not entirely clear, the regular Last Sunday Quiz at Margao draws fewer participants than the First Sunday Quiz at Dona Paula. It reminded me of the Port town of Vasco da Gama in the late 1990s, when shops, bars, and restaurants would remain deserted for the last few days of the month. But as the calendar page turned and salaries disbursed, these locations would spring back to life.

Margao quiz has its own charm, the huge auditorium, with great acoustics and lighting and the promise of a samosa that Dona Paula cannot match in texture and taste. With his trademark smile, Srijit, ably assisted by Vilas, shuffled participants into four evenly matched teams. Another hallmark of Margao monthly is its ability to attract fresh faces. This time, Gurjot with charming Poonam and the Phadtes (husband-wife duo of doctors from BITS Pilani) joined the fold.

The young quizmasters, Omkar Bhurke and Karan Dhingra, wasted no time in setting the pace. The opening written round featured ten clever questions—each tied to an IPL team through wordplay or picture clues, with bonus points for spotting the overarching connection. Only one team managed a perfect score; few others did crack the overall link.

The main rounds included a grid box challenge and two sets of Infinite Pounce questions. The grid comprised 16 boxes labelled Place, Animal, Name, and Thing, each numbered 1 to 4. The twist? Every answer was a single word beginning with one of just four letters. As the round unfolded, we realized with delight that the letters spelled QUIZ, each used exactly four times.

After a spirited tea break, with the customary samosa rush; the final round of four connects proved to be the true test. Tough to crack, yet immensely satisfying when solved, they had participants muttering, “I should have guessed that sooner!”

And that, to me, is the hallmark of a great quiz: one that keeps you on edge, challenges your instincts, and rewards persistence. This one certainly did. Thanks to the masterly shuffling by Srijit there was a winner no doubt, but the other teams were not too far behind.

Hats off to Karan and Omkar — what a knockout performance!

Panjim monthly quiz – 05/April/2026 – Recap and results

QM: Nitish Wagle

How do we know where we fit in?

When nothing in the world seems to make sense, what is it that binds us as a group? How do we forge the connections that provide meaning, and what tools help us define where we stand? How many times must we keep asking these questions until we find the niche that gives us our place in the world; that makes us say- “yep, I belong here. This fits perfectly”.

Connections, and how we define them, seemed to be the theme of Nitish’s excellent quiz at SEQC last sunday. Interspersed with some animal nipples , domestic abuse(!) and other such whacky topics thrown in as well , as suggested by our esteemed fellow quizzers. However, what struck us was how easily he tied these topics, with genuinely good fundas like identifying a young, uncredited Tabu in the movie Bazaar!

There were 5 rounds with the first being such a complete bouncer for some (Nitish claimed it was "topical," but in the mad world we’ve been plunged into, the list of current topics is infinite). The questions (along with the answer slides this time, thankfully) were a delight: accessible, informative, and anchored by a refreshingly non-gimmicky points system. There were even leftover echoes of his "Origins" quiz from a few months ago.

Someone reminded me the other day , that if we are looking for people that speak our language, then, we need to speak many languages,so we will have many people of our own. Folks at SEQC are such people- multi lingual polyglots, who are bound by ties of curiosity, of a shared wonder at esoteric etymologies, who rhyme Idris Elba with Nellie Melba. In a world that currently feels alien, what a rare and beautiful thing it is to be connected to this group.

The main battle for supremacy was between the teams of the two standout quizzers of the evening – Sameer Volvoikar and Shaunak Sardessai. On this occasion, Sameer, backed by Sanjay Parab and the young Shiv Nadkarni, prevailed.

Final scores

1st – Team IV

A Versatile Quiz: Sunday Evening of Wit and Wonder

Review of the Margao Feb monthly by Assis Sequeira

The February sun lingered, the heat pressing down and making us long for cooler weather. Relief finally dawned as we stepped into the Hospicio’s air conditioned auditorium, where the outside world seemed miles away. The atmosphere shifted instantly from sultry discomfort to eager anticipation, as all eyes turned toward the stage.

On the stage or rather in front of the stage, the dynamic quizmaster duo—Devika Shetty and Vilas Pavithran—were all set to orchestrate an afternoon of intellectual excitement. Devika, with her trademark radiant smile, welcomed the audience warmly, while Vilas, sporting his mischievous grin, added a spark of playful energy. Together, they struck a perfect balance: charm and wit, precision and humour.

The Quiz Experience
• Range of Questions: The duo guided participants through a sweeping journey of knowledge, from ancient civilizations to contemporary events. Their incisive questions touched upon landmark historical moments, cultural trivia, and fascinating nuggets of information that kept the players on edge.
• Innovative Rounds: A particularly memorable segment featured a world map, cleverly marked with the birth and death locations of global personalities. Contestants had to connect the dots—literally and figuratively—between geography and history, making the round both challenging and visually engaging. Contrary to the slogan ‘Global is Local’ all the teams missed identifying the only Goan featuring in the segment.
• Pounce Questions with a Twist: Adding to the thrill, the pounce round came with a clever catch. Contestants could opt for a clue, but at the cost of halving their points. This rule tested not only knowledge but also strategy, forcing participants to weigh risk against reward.

The energy in the auditorium was palpable. Most questions sparked murmurs, gasps, and bursts of applause. The quizmasters’ seamless coordination and engaging style ensured that even though a few questions flew over my head, I felt proud to be part of the intellectual challenge. Like all SEQC contests, it was more a celebration of curiosity and fun learning.

As the clock ticked relentlessly, time became the only adversary the duo could not outwit. The much anticipated final round of twelve questions had to be shelved, leaving the players with a bittersweet sense of longing. Yet, the enthusiasm and joy generated throughout the quiz ensured that it would be remembered not for what was missed, but for what it delivered.

February Monthly 2026- Panjim

Artwork for Mayur credited to Upesh Pradhan

Traditions have survived millennia for a reason. They provide continuity in a world that feels alien. People die, cities change, our bodies look different. But traditions, and our stories associated with them, will survive. They provide a sense of control and indeed, comfort to the ones left behind. They are illusions, created by mankind to pull the greatest trick of all- immortality.

And so it was yesterday. The show must go on, as is tradition. Mayur once told me , one should aspire to be notorious enough to be featured in a quiz. He would be tickled to know that he was in Annie’s quiz yesterday. I remember in my early days at SEQC, there was a quiz Mayur had hosted and he put in the quote by Carl Sagan (echoing my thoughts for Mayur right now): "In the vastness of space and the immensity of time, it is my joy to share a planet and an epoch with Annie.” He had told me later how much he admired Annie and how lucky he felt to be a part of SEQC.

Of course, he would have wished the circumstances were different. My man had a lot to live for. But as the memorial showed, he had a large life , and an even larger impact on our lives .Death is never the end if one doesn’t want it to be.

The quiz was brief and excellent. However, the SEQC community is large and will hopefully continue for much longer than any of us will be here. But until then, we live to fight another day, ask another question, and show up on the next Sunday. As is tradition.

Dear all,

As we continue our pause in programming to mourn Mayur, we will not be hosting the Margao January monthly this Sunday.

Instead, we will come together next Sunday, 1st February, at the Panjim February monthly to remember and celebrate Mayur.

Further details about the memorial will be shared in a separate announcement soon.

Thoughts on the Panjim monthly- 11/Jan/2025

This is not a recap per se. Nitish said he is going to run this quiz online at some point, so I will not write any spoilers. This is more of an exploration post the quiz.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A good quiz is merely a cipher because it allows the brain to feel whatever it wants to feel. We might feel elation, at times dejection, frustration or in rare moments, even exuberance; we can feel all this or nothing at all. Yes, a good quiz is a cipher, a mirror, to see what we choose to see.

And what is it about a good quiz that makes us feel this way? Why do we subject ourselves to the torture of racking our brains and hearts for answers? And where exactly, are those answers coming from? Are they inside us, or are they hidden in the warm camaraderie of the team? Or are they in fact pulled out of the thin air by a well-devised clue (a Gujarati one, perhaps)? Are they held secret in the grids of our childhood games?

A good quiz, like the one hosted by Nitish last Sunday, leaves one hungry for more. It creates an atmosphere fuelled by thoughtful questions, engaged teams, and the raucous bonhomie of the evening. Is that what compels a quizzer to return? After all, our only reward is a subtle nod from the Quizmaster and a few points. Why do we come at all, when we could be metaphorically, lazing in a hammock instead?. Perhaps we come to belong in the collective laughter when a teammate unintentionally flubs a 15-pointer question after she makes a point on the unfairness of a 15-pointer question.

In that sense, quizzing is much like the tortures of young love: we suffer through exquisite pain for the promise of something beautiful. We are like addicts searching for the next high, or cult members in a trance. Everything makes sense in that moment when the answer fits the question. We find heaven in the hallowed halls of the GBS.

The quiz itself was beautifully structured, with the titles of the rounds themselves designed as questions. There were 6 rounds, and dispatched at a quick pace, spanning from politics to sports, history, geography, religion, food and more.

We have had a great start to 2026 and it is only January. There is more to come, and more to know about own selves through what we choose to see and remember.

So long then, until next Sunday.

A trivial start to 2026 :Recap of the Panjim monthly- 4th January 2026

Here we go again. A bright, shiny new year unspooling before us, waiting to be filled with memories and musings. It feels like the new year is not made of days but threads, dangling in front of us. Some threads are glamorous and remarkable -these are the “Big Life Events”- and some are colourful and happy, marking all the fun we have had.  Most, though, are beige, because they represent our daily lives in all their unnoticed, ordinary glory. Yet, some of these beige threads are actually Trojan horses, sneakily making their way into our hearts, so we remember later.

Now, frankly my dears, what kind of thread do you think the quiz hosted by Shujoy and Raunak shall be? Perhaps only time will tell. One fine day at a party, you might throw in trivia about how there is only one British monarch named Victoria, or how Armenia uses Ararat Mountain symbolism despite it being in Turkey.

Quizzers must be annoying to other party guests.

Last Sunday’s quiz was a good start to the new year. The homage to Trivial Pursuits was sweet as that is how Shujoy said he started quizzing. Raunak had some sports questions that even lay people could answer. What else do we need at the start of the year other than a host of new things to learn and some wedges!

They had 4 rounds with one hex round at the end. Round 1 was written, for answers ranging from 1-10 only. You would think it would be easy to guess how many times an Indian PM has visited Pakistan!

Rounds 2 and 4 were set in the Trivial Pursuit format. Questions ranged from geography, history, arts and literature, sports and leisure and entertainment. Each topic had wedges that would earn the team bonus points. Due to the nature of the game, the questions alternated between topics for each team. Therefore, even though it continued for two rounds, it felt quite dynamic. The questions were also assiduously set by the QMs.

Round 3 was called sibling rivalry. It paired two teams for a set, with 3 questions each. The Gen Alpha slangs were fun to decipher and thoroughly confused the multiple generations present.

Thus ended the inaugural SEQC quiz of the year 2026. Thank you to the quizmaster duo for knitting such a beautiful patchwork thread into our Sunday. Hope this one has whetted your appetite as we have a full quizzing calendar ahead.

See you at the next one!
