Recap of November monthly - QM Doc Chandrashekhar - 2/Nov/2025

Musings of a Sunday Evening quiz

There is something redolent in the waters of Goa that makes the environment perfect for quizzing. We are deluged with torrential downpours for half the year; and the other half is spent in sun dappled serenity. The weather adds the secret umami to how we quiz here, how we live here. Life follows a winding rhythm, a gentle slowing of pace that invites one to sit down, take notes, and read a little more.

And much like how our Arabian sea has its moods and vagaries, I have come to the realisation that a quiz set often reflects the QM’s state of mind. There is no hiding- their interests are laid bare for the audience to see. It is an intimate relation really, one that lets you peek inside their minds and connect at a very unique and personal level.

So, that brings me to the excellent mind of Doc Chandrashekhar, our QM for last Sunday’s Panjim monthly. If I may borrow a musical metaphor- he was a maestro, expertly wielding the orchestra of his vast knowledge to compose a perfect score. There were staccato notes like the connect rounds and thrilling arias like the rapid-fire round, and then, the crescendos where we collectively went “Aha” like in the Netflix intro music question. It was a symphony of genres and tempos that reflected his eclectic taste, and what a good show it was! For e.g., do you happen to know the difference between judicial and suicidal hangings? Pity it was not a question in the break neck rapid fire round!

Do I even need to mention the Afsoses? Doc seemed to have restrained himself before the chai break, but post the added fortifications, it was Afsos galore! We were cowering under the volley, but this is now a rite of passage- especially for the new comers who filled the auditorium.

Teams 3 and 6 tied to take the top prize and thus ended a much-anticipated event on the SEQC calendar. So long till the next time and the next protean QM!

Recap of October Margao monthly - QM Annie - 26/Oct/2025

Shock and Awe - A Recap by Assis Sequeira

Neither the continuous outpouring from the skies with the occasional burst of lightning nor the promise of gridlocked traffic could deter the band of a score and ten determined quiz lovers from reaching the fifth-floor auditorium. The incessant rains did delay the start of the proceedings. US returned, long lost Harsh Hegde breezed in to a warm welcome. But Harsh was not the only surprise entrant. Dr. Neil, an orthopaedic surgeon and Maria, his charming wife joined the growing tribe of ‘populi quizzi’.

QM Annie in his trademark loosely hanging outfit, the bloating floating pants, the shirt that is like a wind wane and strokable gentle beard plugged the audience in. His poster, crafted by the genius Srijit depicted an electrified Annie, current emanating from his every pore.

Introductions done, Annie dished out answer sheets to the captains of the six competing teams for a deceptively simple written round based on the algebraic ‘X’. Unfortunately for our team no 5, we couldn’t decipher either the Hindi movie or the cricketer with an ‘x’, pushing us to the bottom of the ladder.

Annie progressed to a round of twin questions, combination of an easy and difficult question that were revealed, once you chose a box from the grid of twelve boxes. The titles were eye-catching; ‘Everything about Turkey’ and ‘What is left’ for instance. Incidentally, Turkey box did not feature Turkish towels and the left meant actual left – sinistra. Team 3 led by Vilas forged ahead, closely followed by Team 2 led by Ira.

This was followed by a list question – with a timer of two minutes, listing as many as possible, the twenty countries with ten letters in their name (single word like Mauritania or a combo like New Zealand). Team 1 with Paul aced this round.

A delectable tea break followed, sweetened by Hershey’s carried by sweet Devika. A fully charged Annie fired us with a volley of infinite pounce and pass questions; many of the questions were a déjà vu of what had been covered earlier. Typical Annie at his best. This was followed by the final round of connect questions.

The tables turned and Team 2 led by Ira emerged the winner closely followed by Team 3 led by Vilas. No one was happier than Magali for being part of the winning team.

In the end, it was the quizzed, who were dazzled by the brilliance of the QM, the intricate connect and linking with the different sets and themes.

Annie left everyone in shock and awe. Even the gods were kind. The rains stopped when the quiz got over.

Recap of the Borders and Boundaries - 19/ Oct/2025 , Margao

All the world’s a playground

Last Sunday, Chandrakant took on the ambitious task of hosting a quiz that mixed Geography and Sports, a combination that is not often seen in quizzing. Kudos to him for choosing to make such an unconventional set, which balanced interesting factoids and trivia. The quiz was genuinely enjoyable, and Chandrakant kept things engaging throughout. Brevity is an underrated virtue in a QM, and Chandrakant nailed it, even with five rounds and a rather convoluted points system.

He kicked off round 1 with Roulette featuring two sets of questions on the namesake topics. This format seems to be gaining in popularity, having made an appearance in the last Panjim monthly hosted by Samyak and Chinmay as well. The only issue with this round was that the initial teams get an unfair benefit while listing the responses on the go.

Next up was a direct Q&A “Mixed bag” round with five free pounces per team. However, the teams could also “buy” additional pounces as required. A unique feature here was the option to stake one of three direct questions for double points. The questions spanned from jalebi deliveries to ping pong diplomacies, with national anthem fundas thrown in for good measure. Chandrakant managed to cover a wide range of sports themes as well, eschewing mostly the usual cricket, football, and tennis-related questions.

Round 3 was deceptively simple. Teams picked a topic and had to choose all 5 answers from the multiple choices given. Only one team managed a full house, proving once again that appearances can be deceiving.

After a quick chai and samosa break, we went into the final rounds. The connect round came with a twist: each individual question was a type of cryptic clue. The last round, aptly titled “Conquer the World,” had teams identifying countries marked with red bindis (Operation sindoor?) and their capitals, amidst passionate arguments. The design of this round was smart in that it allowed the teams to choose countries they felt confident about answering. By the end of the quiz, team 4 took first place at 327, with teams 5 and 3 not too far behind.

Overall, it was a nice Diwali Eve quiz which stitched together an interesting mix of geography and sports topics. While the points system could have been a tad simpler, Chandrakant managed it well. Special thanks to Paul for keeping up with the scoring! Here’s hoping we get to see more interesting combinations of topics and new QMs, who take on the task of providing a good evening of quizzing for SEQC.

Panjim Monthly - 05/Oct/2025 -Recap and Results

Two the Point

Samyak and Chinmay hosted a fantastic quiz last Sunday. There were 6 rounds in total, which usually means a long evening, but the duo managed to keep a tight leash. There was also an entertaining mix of formats — audio, Russian roulette, wordsmash and traditional Q&A.

Round 1 featured audio clips of popular cartoon theme songs from the 90s which instantly transported us to a time of carefree nostalgia. It was funny and surprising to realize how little we actually know about the beloved songs we still sing- like who were the singers, composers, and lyricists behind them.

Next came an interesting round where two sets of questions had answers that sounded similar (ish). The wordplay gave the teams plenty of opportunities to swoop in to steal points from others directs. The following Connect round was equally fun, featuring some surprising revelations like Ram Jethmalani’s bigamous past!

At the break we indulged in a spread of mawa and fruit cakes, samosas, and many cups of chai. SEQC breaks are truly special, being as they are full of bonhomie, camaraderie, and general catching up. It sometimes feels like quizzing is just an excuse to enjoy each other’s company.

Post the break, we entered into a spirited round of Russian roulette, which had everyone on the edge of their seats since there were only 5 seconds to give the answer. Teams faced elimination if their designated captain fumbled and gave a repeated or wrong answer and there were some heads that rolled immediately.

The evening wrapped up with a traditional Q&A round followed by the now familiar wordsmash segment. Overall, it was a wonderfully balanced quiz, run seamlessly by our able quizmasters Samyak and Chinmay, and mercifully free of any KV references this time!

Coincidentally for a double QM quiz, two sets of teams tied for the 2nd and 3rd place, with team 6 zooming away to a comfortable win at 395. Here’s to more such harmonious, multi-QM quizzes.

An evening to remember

Imagine if you will a scenario- you are on an evening drive with your new girlfriend (or boyfriend) and “Ek mai aur ek tu, dono mile is tarah” starts to play on the radio. The memories from that drive are likely to be imprinted in your mind forever- the smell of the river, the hue of the twilight sky, the gentle way in which she smiles at you while the breeze blows her hair in her face, and the absolute joy you feel when you realize how aptly the song adds to the promise of your future together.

One of life’s most beautiful truths is the universality of music. Most people will feel the urge to speed up like SRK when “Yeh dil! deewanaa, dewanaaaaaaaa hai ye dil” starts playing in our cars, and all of us gaze into the distance in melancholia when we hear “Kahiiiin door, jab din dhal jaaye”.”Music is the soundtrack to celebrating the big moments of life, but also, the mundane ones like cooking, cleaning and working. It is a silent witness and a steady companion to our stories.

Last Sunday’s Antakshari quiz has set a high benchmark for SEQC. Thanks to our well-versed Quiz masters, Shwetambari and Sanjay, we were treated to an evening of musical magic. Their quiz was a masterclass – concise and entertaining in equal measure-and included rounds such as singing missing lines, identifying songs from their opening bars to pictionary and dumb charades. Songs spanned decades to include hits from the 1950s to recent chart busters like “Saiyaara”, thus ensuring everyone was included - even those who are tone deaf.

My personal favorites were 1) the singing round because it was a pleasant surprise to see folks singing with great voices and enthusiasm and 2) the “hook step” dumb charades because Shwetambari chose such spot-on songs and even aided the teams by doing them when we were not able to.

The QMs were expertly supported by their kids, Sudhanshu and Siddhanth, who seemed to have been infected by their parents’ musical bug as well! Together they ensured that party to pakki thi!! The evening was aided by the expert attention of the staff at Carlito’s Attique who kept us well fed with lip-smacking goan food and delicious cocktails.

A huge thank you to the Parab family for doing this and to Devika and Srijit, for securing a venue that matched the raucous spirit of the event. Here’s hoping this quiz marks the beginning of a new annual SEQC tradition. Until then—gaata rahe humara dil!

Panjim Monthly - 07/Sep/2025 - Results

QM: Annie Sen Gupta

Are you Wordy or Not?

If you attended the Panjim Monthly on the 7th, you would know what it means to be in thrall of a true connoisseur of the words. There were just so many words- wordplays, words within words and verbose texts that had us scratching our heads and pulling our hair -this was mostly Mayur Shett- to arrive at the answers.

Annie was at his loquacious best as the QM, deftly navigating multiple genres with aplomb– from Taiwan politics to Greek mythology and from Zulu songs to Bombay mafia and even 6 connect questions thrown in for good measure.

It was a good day for SEQC overall as some of our folks scooped up the awards at the Janaki Kamat Memorial quiz organized by Suraj Kamat and team at The Quizlabs earlier in the day. With high energy and a full house,we embarked into various rounds starting with the“Kangaroo” set. The chai and samosa break was especially welcome yesterday as we powered through six rounds in pursuit of Wordsmithdom.

We didn’t get an “Annie” question this time, but there was a self-referential Ho Chi Minh image—whose birth name was Nguyễn as we learned —so that sort of counts, I guess. Team 4 turned out to be wordy wise and came first with 335 points, with other teams not too far behind.

Overall, it was good fun and next time please bring your reading glasses (especially the back benchers).

Lit AF Literature Quiz – 17/Aug/2025 – Results

It all began with an Annie — as is tradition.
SEQC gathered on a rainy Sunday afternoon for the Literature and Language quiz that
was nothing short of literary indulgence. It was akin to digging into a delightfully
decadent murder mystery novel.
From nostalgic tales of childhood to Japanese poets, Annie’s questions danced across
genres and geographies — classic authors, obscure scribes, ghazal maestros, and
even an American rap artist made appearances.
6 teams fiercely battled it out for the title of the most Lit (!), with the first half ending in a
tight neck to neck race. Post the chai, samosa and socializing break, the teams went
guns blazing into the next two rounds.
Team 1 soared ahead with an overwhelming 270 to clinch the much deserved first
place, with team 4 not too far behind at 230.
Felicitations and congratulations to all the winners, a warm welcome to newest crop of
quizzers and most of all a big Thank You to Annie for making us feel like we need to
read more.

SEQC Road trip: The day that time did not stand still

What is the measure of a good time? For most, it is that fleeting feeling when time slips by so quickly, you hardly even notice. And for SEQC, the 10th of August 2025 was exactly that kind of day. After too many polls, vehicle plannings and pit stop discussions, we finally made our way to the Rishivan farms in Rivona, with a pit stop at Usgalimal. Following is a broad outline of this day filled with camaraderie, laughter and of course quizzing!

The day started early at 8.45 AM at the meeting spot in Panjim. With a gentle drizzle and overcast skies, it was the perfect weather for a road trip. On the way, Mayur started things with a quick road trip themed set followed by yours truly. But the true highlight of this leg of the journey was a soulful English/Konkani song that Rajiv taught us (the next generation supposedly) —one that extolled the virtues of soldiers heading to war for their country. It brought tears to our eyes.

Our driver, Sunil bab, made excellent time, and soon we were pulling into Shervin’s in Nuvem for a delicious breakfast—crispy samosas, rissois, and piping hot chai. Next door, the Madre Dos Pobres Church was alive with Sunday devotions, and we could not help but wonder if we were about to eat the congregation’s share of the post liturgical feast too! After stocking up on sodas and mixers at the nearby Bagayatdar, spirits were high, and tummies were full and the road beckoned—we were officially on our way!

Finals Round 1

Finals Round of 8

ASoT Ep3: "How It Ends" - 18/May/2025 - report

One couldn't have scripted a closer finish. At the end of the final episode of As Seen on TV (ASoT), Srijit ended with 90 points, winning the series by a single question's margin over Nitish (80), with Vilas (75) coming in a very close 3rd.

ASoT was a solo series that ran over the course of three episodes -- one each in March, April and May. Unlike other such series in the past, there was no cumulative leaderboard. Instead, the top finishers in each episode accrued some advantage at the next. Srijit climbed up the competition ladder steadily. After failing to qualify for the Ep 1 Finals, he finished in shared 3rd place in Ep 2, before finally emerging champion for Year 2024-25.

Pre-qualified contestants from Ep 2
1. Shashwat (couldn't attend Ep 3)
2. Nitish
3. Srijit
4. Raunak
5. Ira (couldn't attend Ep 3)
6. Devika

Qualifiers for the Round of 12
1. Rajiv (prelims score 33.5)
2. Vilas (31)
3. Shujoy, Viola (25)

7. Nikhil, Anirudh (23)
9. Ruchira, Nathan (22)

Divided into groups of 3, these 12 took the Jeopardy-style Round 1 of the Finals, with the winner of each group joining the pre-qualified 4 from Ep 2 in the Round of 8. That Round had 3 parts, at the end of which, these were the final standings:

Final standings
1. Srijit (90 points)
2. Nitish (80)

As Seen on TV long-format series – Ep1: Results

The long-format solo series for SEQC's 2024-25 season, As Seen on TV, got under way with some drama and surprises. The Prelims round was done Kaun Banega Crorepati style. It was a high-scoring Prelims, topped by Rajiv with a stunning 23 out of 26 correct answers. Fifteen others joined him in the Finals, with a number of the usual Seed types not making it onstage.

The first Round of the Finals added a Survivor / Weakest Link twist, with participants voting to eliminate competitors. Not surprisingly, Rajiv was the target of this voting, and was eliminated without having answered a single question, poor chap. Later, Ajay suffered the same fate.

This format also meant unusual finishes across the board. But eventually, when the dust had cleared, it was a bit of the same-old same-old, with Shashwat winning by several lengths from Vilas. The top 4 from this Episode will get an automatic bye into the Finals of Episode 2, to be held on April 13.
